Off-the-cuff comment evacuates Phoenix Convention Center
by Leigh Zinsmeister and Scott Wong - Oct. 5, 2009 04:45 PM
The Arizona Republic
The Phoenix Convention Center allowed people to re-enter the building Monday afternoon after security received a suspicious package Monday afternoon, forcing an evacuation, authorities said.
Around 1:15 p.m., a man attending the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America's “Save the Dream” convention handed an event security guard a soft lunch box.
The man told the guard, “This is not mine. I hope it doesn't explode,” said Phoenix Detective
James Holmes.
The guard contacted security for the Convention Center and Phoenix Police. Authorities secured the third floor of the center's north building. People in other parts of the building were forced to evacuate.
Phoenix Detective James Holmes said the lunch box had “personal items.”
Police believe the unidentified man, who they have detained for questioning, might have found the package and simply made a mistake by referencing explosives when turning it in.
“It doesn't matter if he did the right thing,” Holmes said. “We can't be making jokes like this.”
NACA, a Massachusetts-based non-profit group, was providing free counseling to homeowners battling foreclosure by modifying their loans to make payments more affordable.
During the past few days, thousands of people attended Save the Dream's downtown Phoenix stop. The Western leg of the nationwide tour kicked off Sept. 24 in Los Angeles, and next heads to Las Vegas and San Francisco
