what cell phone carrier do you have?
from my experience, CDMA networks like Sprint and Verizon have some of the best service on the east coast. When I was in NYC for the first time, I had sprint, and I was getting service on the subways.
When I was there this summer, ATT was dead down there, but my phone worked totally fine. As far as the midwest goes, ATT seems to have some of the strongest service.

AT&T for my personal phone...no problems other than a few dropped calls even in 3G network...discounted price for being in the Army
Nextel for my work phone..no real complaints and I get a discount for being a Police Officer

11 years with Verizon, and no longer contract. great service and their customer service at the stores are great. my only complaint is that their phones are not to impressive right now. I'm just going to wait and see what they get and make a decision if I want to leave or not.
Sprint SERO $30
500 Anytime starts at 7PM
Unlimited data, sans tethering
Unlimited MMS / texts
Love it. However, they are phasing out these plans so they dont let you upgrade phones without getting a new plan. But their new plans have unlimited minutes to any mobile provider...at twice the price I currently pay.

Just make sure you tell them not to change your plan at all.
