Wouldnt a spike be considered a forward pass (even on the smallest scale?)

No forward passes are allowed on an opposing team recovery, only laterals. The "spike" was a fumble by default.

An interception, then the spike is a fumble (no contact and no player down), and then theres the imminent fumble recovery and touchdown.
