Home Theatrical Crew - Audio Heads
Is there a purpose for bookshelf speakers. Is there a reason why I would pick bookshelf speakers over the kind that comes with receivers or you can buy alone. I know dick about bookshelf speakers or speakers in general. But i'm just trying to price out some front, rear and center speakers and was looking at the Sony SSB1000's for the front, the SSCR3000 package for the Center and Rear. I can get them all on amazon for 120.99 shipped. Probably cheaper judging what my BB discount is on the SSB1000's.

The only way to buy audio components is by listening to them first. There is no official agency to check the manufacturers advertised product specifications.

It's convenience of placement and size when you break it all down. There are an equal number of really high quality bookshelf speakers as there are really crappy but price reflects this in most cases.
Been a while since I looked into them but I know JBL used to make a really kick ass set that was priced really fair for the quality. Check Crutchfield for good deals on them and quit getting raped by BB.

Honestly, to build on what has already been said, personal preference in sound plays bigger than anything. You can tweak most average pairs of speakers to sound like you want and won't notice a big difference until you take a very large price jump. I'm running the speakers that came with my Yamaha receiver and am very happy all around. They are the small speakers, a center channel and a sub. It took tweaking, but overall, they are great.

I heard good things about JBL but they're a little more then i'm looking to spend. They're in there 50's so i'm looking for something a little modest but not all tinny sounding.
