Default Home theater/video game/tech heads: cable question

so i'm looking at a way to get my PS3 hooked into my computer monitor (no HDMI), and DVI looks like a solid option.

Heres the thing:

my monitor looks like it has a plug for the bottom, dual link version of HDMI. my buddy has a TV with (again sadly no HDMI) what looks like the top, single link version.

if i get a converter for HDMI to single link, will it work on my monitor's dual link, as well?

well there's 2 types of DVI's, was wondering if the male one with less pins would still fit/work in a female one with the more pins, essentially.
