Bus?
nothing wrong with taking the bus.... i've taken the bus probably a good 3 out of the 4 years in university...
obviously its more convenient to take your own car, but sometimes its 'easier' to take the bus (see joes comment)... but if my car broke down, i would take the bus no problem... tell your friend to swallow her pride and get on the damn bus.

a. Parking is mad $$$
b. There's a bus stop right in front of my house
c. Downtown is not too far away so it won't be an endless bus trip.
We had a pretty bad snowstorm here back in January. I didn't want to risk taking my car out so I took the bus. Aside from costing $5 a day, it took just over an hour to get to work, as opposed to my usual commute of 25-30 minutes. If I really came into hardship and take the bus, I wouldn't mind it too much. Just be sure to have a book and/or music to listen to.
or you could look up the route numbers and see which route goes to the destination you're looking for.

music + phone vibrating alarm = good nap and little chance you'll miss your stop!
save environment, save gas, save stress from getting stuck in traffic jam..
It depends on where you live I think.
Sacramento has an awesome bus system including outlying areas.
Phoenix...not so much since bus schedules tended to be a general guideline instead of an actual schedule.
Portland isn't too bad as long as you live in the greater Portland area, once you get to outlying it becomes questionable unless you hop the MAX (Lightrail).
NY I would do the Subway before a bus or even a Taxi, but then surface traffic is the suck in that city so walking tended to be faster.
Where I am at right now has no bus system at all, they have one that supposedly runs into the next town or two but I have yet to see it actually run or any bus stops for it anywhere.

Taking the bus requires forsight. Hopping on a random bus in hopes of getting to your destination doesn't work. Most bus stops are "named" based on their location, aka "3rd and Main", "Front & Ash", etc. Not really that difficult.
I dunno about that stress thing, I have been in two breakdowns of the MAX line while going through the 26 tunnel, let me tell you it is a bit of a hike out of there :chuckles:. The other time we were about a mile from the next stop.
