Default network ppl help me out

I got a netgear wireless router hookup to a wired desktop and trying to use my wireless laptop. the problem is the router is giving the laptop an invalid ip 169...
with or without security and on any mode the problem is the same.
Is a netgear WPN824 with the latest firmware.

Check the settings for the ip range

are you expecting 192.168.1.?

yup .2 and .1 is the router. Once I got a valid ip but when I reboot the laptop it went back to the 169. ip heh

You may have your laptop's dhcp request turned off.

Right click on your network connection, properties, TCP/IP properties.

If it is set to DHCP, tell it you want a static one, and enter it.

If it is not set to DHCP, and you see that weird address there, swap it to DHCP, or just change the address

I found an option on the router menu that says setup access list and when I click on it I found the laptop, and hit add.
I've never setup a wireless connection this way but is working now

Just adding info here even though the issue is fixed.

An IP address with a first octet of 169 is a locally assigned (by Windows) address. If you see this, that means you're router isn't assigning the host an IP address from the DHCP pool.

but yes, if you get a 169, it's not your router giving it to you, it's YOUR computer.
