well that makes sense, but is saying "i'm going to watch the laker game" still incorrect?

and what if the person isnt using it as a possesive, like "im going to watch the lakers game"? is that incorrect?

Strictly speaking, both of those are wrong.
"Laker" is being used as an adjective, when it really is a proper noun.

Laker game is most socially acceptable.

Saying "I'm going to the Lakers' game" makes you sound like a stooge, regardless of grammar.
