You're not actually buying the shares when you short, you're selling them. You Borrow money to sell them, then when you buy them back at a cheaper price, you pocket the difference.
Rb is correct. You are essentially borrowing the shares from someone.

s&p500 has strong resistance at the 800 level.
If you looked at the volume this past 2 weeks it have been weak overall(minus financials). The big funds were sitting on the side while the ignorant permabulls were buying. Isnt it ironic that as soon as we hit 800 we turned right around? I may be wrong though
