The reason men were allowed to have multiple wives was because women weren't able to make a living on their own back in the day....so if there was, for instance, a woman who was married and had kids, but her husband was killed in a war, she wouldn't be able to raise her children. Therefore, some man who was financially able, would become her husband and help raise her family. like å said...there has to be a reason, though. a man can't just go and get married to a bunch of different women just because.
