me personally will use a fork or spoon for loose stuff like fried rice even at a chinese buffet

if chopsticks are there, like i'm at a restaurant or something, i'll give them a shot for about two minutes. then i'll just grab the fork.

Ah yes, fried rice is impossible with chopsticks so I do use a fork for that. White rice, however, is chopstick-manageable.

Fork = takeout eating at home, typical junk food buffet places, food court, I go for a fork. Better to shovel in my face with.

Once you step up to decent cooking, noodle dishes, dishes where the rice isn't slathered in sauce, sushi, and pho; I go for chopsticks.

Curries, fried rice, and other things that get the rice all saucy I stick to a fork.
