before they become unusable??

i think they do, but not sure how long it is. anyone knows?

Depends on how they are stored.

If you look on the sidewall there is actually a date stamped into them, some have what they consider a "shelf life date" as well but not sure how widely that is used.

6 years max. You can check the date they were made by using the DOT number on the sidewall.

My buddy just put tires on his truck that were sitting on the shelf (indoors) for 8 years... they were basically free, and it's just a beater work truck that never sees the highway.

I personally wouldn't buy anything that's been sitting around for more than a year or so... once they're on the car and out in the elements, they'll degrade much faster.
