I've used cakewalk and protools, both are great. I believe you can get a basic version of protools for free off their website.

Cool Edit Pro stopped production around 2003 and was rebadged as Adobe Audition.

Don't really see how you can say "they suck" though. I've been using the product since 1999 and have no complaints.

I am going to give Acid a shot since it was a gift, but I'll keep those in mind, thanks

I remember reading something about that.

I am having major problems with "clipping" I guess you could call it and the editing tools seem to be lacking. I have a direct line from my Line Out to the Line in on the pc, and even with the gain/bass turned down, I still have problems.

Note: Register your software if you buy it, I had lost my manual with my serial number, but I called the Customer Service number and it turns out I had registered my product and they were able to retrieve my key

clipping has NOTHING to do with the software
if your signal/input is clipped with cool edit pro, you'll get it with any other program.

first thing first,
test your audio card to see where it distortion creeps in,
loop the output -> input and use soundmark analyzer to check
once adjusted the gains on your soundcard properly, then adjust the gains from your instruments/amps
