Default computer crew v. netbooks

looking for a laptop in the $400 range
leaves me with few options, either a bare bones refurbed POS, or a netbook

have my sights on a lenovo s10, 1gb ram, 160gb hd, xp, 10.2" screen
thoughts?

if anyone can find a 12-13" screen in that price range i would also love to know

last, looking for a cheap external hd, 250-500gb, brands to look for, avoid?

Are you looking for a laptop or just something small to use primarily for the interwebz? Why not just spend $150-$200 more and get something bigger and beefier?

I bought my mom an HP for Christmas that was dual core, 15", 4GB, 250GB, integrated burner w/lightscribe, yada yada yada ... for $599 at Best Buy. :dunno:

i had a 15.4" pos toshiba, and i beat it to death, broke a hinge, finally the motherboard crapped out

so im looking for smaller and tougher
budget is limited, unemployed ftl

i have found a handful of refurbished lenovo, dell, sony, etc... but they are all still in the $6-700 range for anything not 15.4"

really i dont do much that would require a full size laptop though, it would just be nice to have the option if i could find one in the price range

also i intend on building a htpc when i get the money, so a netbook would complement that nicely later on, but that is probably much later on h:

I have the Lenovo S10. What attracted me to it was the overall design. It doesn't look like a cheap toy like some of the other netbooks. I have the black model and its a matte/flat black that doesn't get dirty very easily. I upgraded the ram to 2gigs and installed a slimmed down version of Vista. It does its job for me.

:chuckles:@slimmed version of vista

I like netbooks. I've always wanted to get an ASUS EEE.
I've heard the dell netbooks are good. I think there is one like 455 or 499 at Costco(3 or 6 month return policy if you don't like it)
Other than that I haven't really been keeping up on them

Asus EEE for 250. Small hard drive and a bit smaller screen than you wanted. There are easy ways to upgrade the hard drive(Although not much) for cheap. Just something to keep in mind since you're looking at externals.

And there is this. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthr...1986&t=1105885
HP tx2500z Tablet PC Turion X2 2 Ghz, 3GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, WiFi, Webcam, 12.1" Touchscreen, Vista Premium $599
Out of your pricerange a little, but its a laptop. Normally 999.
HP, imo, is a good brand. I have a compaq(Made by HP) and I love it. My parents have a 10 year old HP laptop that is still alive and getting used all day, everyday.

Actually, here is an EEE that is 10" and has a 160 gig hd for 310

EEEs are very modable. Bluetooth, upgraded wifi, touch screen. You name it and people have done it.

That's why you buy the cheapest model (some people were getting it for like $236) on slickdeals this week and then upgrade to the 32GB faster better runcore SSD. I mean how much space do you really need on a netbook when you think about it. If you need alot of space then you're using it for the wrong reason
