like all things free, there are a fair share of cons for free testing. It uses e-mail messaging via the text to do this. So you are basically sending SMS using your ATT email account to other peoples texts. So it won't show your name when you text and it will also have a bunch of other junk in the text body. It also takes longer than SMS to send and receiving requires setup.
