Folding@home

it's a grid supercomputer made up of computers and PS3's... your PS3/computer gets sent a portion of code, works on it and then sends it back.

These calculations are fairly simple, but it's the large quantities of them that makes them so impossible. By linking several thousand computers together the calculations can be done faster and results can be seen.

currently it's being used to unfold proteins because even with all the technology we have we still have no idea how most of them function or are internally structured.

technically fah is not a supercomputer, it's distributed computing with supercomputer level of calculating power. also fah isn't unfolding proteins, it's folding proteins. thus "folding" at home.

I used to participate, when I had access to systems with 20+ cores at my lab I ran them as part of my impromptu test cases.

I stand corrected, how long did it used to take those computers to finish a work packet?

don't remember... i couldn't put the systems on the network so I would download XX mBs of data to be worked on then when they finished upload them. in order to not get caught I would only start the folding program when I left work (9-10pm) and by morning it would be done (9-10am) so I really :dunno:

Are you hook up wireless or not? If you're wireless be careful while updating the PS3, if you get cut off you'll get corrupted sectors :/
