We use a softener, our water is so hard anyone can walk on it. We got ours at Sears with the highest grains of hardness that we could get. Still have to go down and run it manually sometimes, as our water has a lot of iron in it and stains the toilet bowl, shower walls etc. If I was building new I would also install an iron filter for about $1500 also.
