it's their "engineering" codes.
I believe the first production model to get the e code was E3 six series.
they have ran through the E## format and has moved on to F## format. the new 7 series that's coming up in 2010 is F01. there are gaps between models because often they use E codes for prototypes and concept cars that never make it to production.

Looks like a big ghey waste of money but to each his own.
At least w/ those you could perch a dump on it and when they drove off it'd... well, do something cool I imagine.
