A truck carrying 5,000 condoms, 800 HIV tests and a 23-foot inflatable prophylactic has disappeared from outside a home in Mexico City.

The "Condomovil," used in an HIV/AIDS awareness tour to promote safe sex, features images of painted peeled bananas shaped like condoms and a shirtless man saying, "I protect myself. Do You?"

The truck and its contents are estimated to be worth around $19,000. The safe sex program has toured Mexico since 1998, distributing 1.2 million condoms to more than 700,000 people. The inflatable condom was used to draw attention from passers-by.

It was last seen Sunday evening, according to tour coordinator Polo Gomez, who believes it was stolen, but doesn't know why.

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - A missing Mexican "condom-mobile" was found in a parking lot outside the capital minus 4,000 condoms and a seven-meter inflatable replica, an HIV/AIDS prevention worker told local television Thursday.


Thieves also took sound equipment and the motor to inflate the giant condom, but left 2,500 HIV tests, said Apolonio Gomez, from the Sol collective, which has toured Mexico promoting HIV/AIDS prevention for the past 10 years.

The truck had just finished a five-week tour of 10 of Mexico's 32 states, during which it distributed more than 80,000 male condoms and 2,000 female condoms.
