Default DSLR Lens crew, quick help

If anyone is on right now.. I've got both the canon 50mm 1.8 and the canon 28mm 2.8 in my cart and I have to choose one.

The 50mm is 80 some bucks

The 28mm is reg. price 290, but clearanced to 180 right now.

I know the 1.8 is a lot faster lens and I'm shooting mostly indoors. I'm taking pictures of the kid 90 % of the time, but am wondering if the wider angle (abliet slower) lens would be more versatile.
:hi5:

Nevermind.. Looks like it's cheaper reg. price elsewhere. 50 it is.

2.8 isn't that much slower. i would go with the 28mm because you'll be taking pics of you kid, who doesn't move much so you can use a slower shutter speed to make up for the slower lens if need be. that is if you can bump the iso.

also 50 f1.8 will always be that cheap. the 28mmm... i doubt it.

50mm is really the equivalent of 80mm in FF/35mm format, which is medium telephoto.

the 28 would be a better choice. also, wider angle = slower shutter speed (1/focal length to minimize camera shake).

I'm no expert, but I agree with what they said. 50mm f/1.8 are usually cheap. Plus on the DSLR, it's like 80mm. The 28mm would be a better candidate. Plus, it's not that slower

No this is incorrect.

50mm is 50mm no matter how you slice it. The "digital crop" is a stupid way of comparing a completely different format of photography to film photography...they do not cross compare.

You also need to pay attention to how limited your depth of field is with a big f-stop, you may be focused on the the nose and the chin could be out of focus... you would be better off shooting about 2 f-stops above the biggest, and that even holds true with an f2.8. They are both good in some situations but they aren't the cure that most people need. If you want to shoot with minimal lighting/flash then go for it just be aware of the limits.
