Default i need help with my computer

I got a laptop a few months ago and I dont like Vista. In order to not void the warranty by overwriting xp over it I wanted to install xp on an external hard drive and run it from there. I made a partition with xp on the hard drive but after the computer restarted to begin installation a blue screen came up with letters and numbers and thats where the installation stops. For my lack of time at that moment I thought I would just return it back to Vista and mess around with it later, so I erased the xp partition off the hard drive. Now when i turn the computer on, it wants to boot xp from the hard drive and a black screen comes up saying something along the lines of, "The disk is inconsistent or corrupt"

How do I change it back to boot Vista?

Go into the bios and tell it to boot from HD01 or whatever, instead of whatever you have at now.

ive done that but still the same thing shows up. this is exactly what it says:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

eta: that error appears to not be a vista error. your mbr is probably fucked.

can you or can you not risk damaging your current file system? either way, you should backup before doing the following if you have irreplaceable data on that partition.

if you have data that you can lose, run a recovery disk and/or recovery partition

if you have irreplaceable data and do not want to take the hassle of backing up then recovering, you can try this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

if that doesn't work, try this http://vistasupport.mvps.org/windows...ir_options.htm

if that doesn't work, recover or backup then recover depending on your situation based upon the aforementioned question.

Boot with a live linux cd, and view your boot.ini on you c:\

Take out the part where it boots XP

Leave the part where it boots Vista.
