well if these girls are 13/14 congrats to them. cause we dont have any 13/14 year olds who can perform at that level.
as for the chinese fudging id's wouldnt surprise me. are girls in china that are 16 really 15 in western age? cause they count them as 1 when they come out of the mom?

I was watching yesterday... and some chick in the romanian team is 15... :thinking:
How does the olympic year work exactly? because in order to compete you have to be 16y/o in that olympic year

Exactly. You have to turn 16 in 2008....so anyone who was born in 1992 (or later) can compete. Some may be 15 b/c they won't turn 16 until Fall, but as long as they turn 16 by Dec.08 its ok.

Similar to how I turn 26 this year. As long as you are of age by Dec. 31st you are fine...at least I think that is how it works

Shawn Johnson is the one who "carries" the US women's team and she's 16 so I'm sure she was awesome at 14 too...but she waited until she was legally allowed to compete.
I don't know, but one of the announcers last night said that the "20" year old Chinese girl was taken away from her family at 3 years old to start training for the Olympics. She now sees her family 1-2 times per year and as a child, she often begged to go back home, but her parents refused, knowing all of the good things a great career in gymnastics could bring her and her family. (Not sure where the announcer got this info.)

I wouldn't exactly call everything good. Sometimes they blackmail families to keep kids, don't forget china was the biggest human rights violations, so don't put it past the govt from coercing parent's into handing over their kids. Women are severely coveted in China so either way the girls would be fine.
