I generally start out at 20%... and then your tip gets reflected by the service you give.
20% for a friendly server who is timely and get the shit right.
less for rude, or unattentive or stupid people
more for above and beyond servers.

i usually double tax and then go up to the next dollar. If the service is bad tho i will go lower then the double tax. But again if it is excellent service maybe a few dollars over the 16%

I usually give the standard 20% unless they show me they don't want it.
I left a 20cent tip once, I think about 10 years ago at Denny's. The waiter was a prick.
