Having wireless problems again.

WRT54G
Wired to my desktop
Wireless to my laptop
Wireless to bro's desktop

A few days ago I reset the cable modem and router due to slow connection speed. This changed the wireless security settings, which were set to WPA. My laptop connected fine. I went to connect my brother's PC today, and it wouldn't connect using the WPA key. I got it to connect after changing the key, but the PC was running sluggish so I restarted it. It would then not connect after that. I turned off wireless security, and it connected fine. I tried WEP128, and it would not connect using that key either. Any ideas?

My laptop connects without a problem, running vista. His PC runs XP.

Reset router again, changed back to WPA with a new key, restarted his computer. I was able to get it to connect to the network. When I opened internet explorer, it would not open any pages, then dropped connection again. It has plenty of signal strength.

I'm about at my wits end trying to fix his stupid computer.

Now it is connected, but will not open any web pages. It's like it connects and disconnects when it pleases.

are you using a utility or windows to connect?- disable any utilities and use windows to connect

if you are having IP issues it could be because the DHCP is handing out an IP thats being used elsewhere via static IP'ing OR his IP is static with mismatched settings.

try making his IP static gateway/dns: 192.168.1.1 subnet:whatever it gives you when you go to it, and make the ip very random 192.168.1.xxx

I've run into the same problem several times w/ my Linksys. The most recent was when trying to stay connected to PSN w/ my PS3.

Honestly, neither of those encryption methods will cause an impact that you'll notice. the overhead is a few hundred K max and wireless has a bandwidth of 54Mb which I'm sure exceeds your home connection.

My suggestion: update the firmware. Every time I've had that issue, I discover a new version came out within the past few months and it always has resolved the problem
