Chicago vs Boston
Chicago is JAMMED on the 4th. The biggest food event takes place around that time, the Taste of Chicago.
The big fireworks display is executed on July 3rd.
I'm not sure what you're looking to do, but the entire area will be locked solid. :X

if you head to boston, check out the north end for great eats.
historical shit and such is nice too.
there's also stuff to do along boston harbor.
there's actually quite a bit to do but you'll want to inform yourself before you head up.

well if you feel like battling the crowd in Boston there is the esplanade pops concert, they actually have a concert the night before the 4th so if you want to see the show without the massive crowd july 3rd would be the time to go. other than that there are a lot of fun bars/pubs to hit up as well as some excellent seafood places where you can get some Maine Lobster. Either way both cities will be packed.
