Default Diagnose what's wrong with my friend's '02 Altima

It started making a really loud clicking sound (that you could feel through the car) and then just died while on the freeway, while slowing down in traffic. He was able to restart it to get it to the side of the side of the freeway where it died again. It'll start, make a noisy clicking sound and die if at low RPM. We had it towed back to his place. Any idea what might be wrong?

No warning lights on the dash, car has oil, it makes the clicking sound even when not in gear... it's not over heating and this came out of no where. Really misaligned valves?
