i think people say that because usually what you see is the return path of lightning, not the lightning itself ... lightning itself still originates in clouds... except of course for the ground-to-cloud, theres like 8 - 10 different forms of lightning. learning about clouds and lightning and rain was SOOOO BORING

and just so he doesn't come back tryin to sound all smart. It can be flowed in an opposite direction but only if the voltage is past the breakdown voltage. Each zener diode has a voltage that when surpassed it will flow backwards in without avalanche breakdown.
