Catalina is over rated. It's fun for the day, but you'll be bored out of your mind if you plan on staying there for the weekend.

Ventura beach is a nice, low-key, relatively inexpensive place to hang out for the weekend, and then a little North of there like others mentioned is Santa Barbara, which is a little more pricey, but has wineries and some fun, romantic things like that to do. Just North of San Luis Obispo is a Morro Bay, and the Inn at Morro Bay is a pimp place to spend a romantic weekend and lounge out. All of these destinations can be nice PCH drives btw.

does the cold bother you?

if not, take a nice drive from SF to LA on Hwy 1 stopping along the beach in Monterey, Pismo Beach or Santa Barbara. drive along HWY 1 from SF to Santa Barbara will take 10+ hours, but it's a beautiful drive and won't break the bank.

the further north you go in Cali, the colder the coast line. cold means ~50-60F at night with a good breeze.

If you want to stay in the Santa Barbara area for cheap, and don't mind a 15 minute drive, stay in Carpinteria at one of the beach hotels. In the off season (aka right now), they can be rather cheap and have the amenities you want. You also then get access to Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez wineries, and heck, if you want I can see if I can get you guys a deal at my friend's restaurant

PS: Fuck Mexico. My brother was mugged by a freakin police officer.

Too cold up here. o:
