Default HAN: tell me about DSLR

specifically the canon digital rebel xti. a couple of my cousins have them and i played with one at the Christmas party and it seems pretty user friendly for the most part.

my kid broke the lens cover on my a640 but it still works but i'm sure at some point or another it will be time to step up.

are these easy to use for someone with just point and shoot experience? i can learn how to do & use pretty much anything so i'm not too concerned with the learning curve.

what are your opinions and experiences with this particular model?

A DSLR has all the capabilities of a PS. You can just shooting in the AUTO or green box modes. It basically does the work for you. This will allow you to shoot and learn at the same time.

I've had an XTi for about 6 months now and have been very happy with it so far. It's my first DSLR and has been really easy to get accustomed to. The camera's pretty light and there's a lot you can do with it. Don't forget that you're not just buying a camera though. You'll probably want to buy some lenses within a month or two of owning it, so take that cost into consideration as well.

Also, the prices of the XTi may be going down soon since the announcement of the next model up, the XSi.

Nikon D40. Can be had with the 18-55 and 55-200 VR for dirt cheap, and it's a fantastic camera.

The Nikons just feel more solid than the Rebels. My roommate has a XTi, just feels like a toy. Pretty good image quality though, but the kit lens isn't all that great.

As draconius... he just got a D40(x i think).

Yeah, i love that about my d50.

A downside to the D40 is that it doesn't have an in-body focus motor, which means that it'll only AF with AF-S lenses, whose lineup is somewhat limited.

It shouldn't be that big of an issue - you are mainly missing out on prime lenses.

personally i don't like the xti. it's too damn small. it also feels cheap and flimsy.
