Default work moral dilemma

Ok, here's the deal: I'm leaving my current company to work for a different company in about 3 weeks. I have always been a super reliable employee (never call in sick, always on time, etc.). Well, it has been brought to my attention that I currently have 5 days worth of sick pay and I'm almost positive that I won't get paid out for these once I leave the company.

So we come to my dilemma. I'd like to use these "sick days" before I leave this job, otherwise I won't get any use out of them. Now, I already talked to my manager (who I'm really cool with) and he said that he obviously can't authorize me to schedule sick days but did kind of guide me as to when, if I needed to call in, would be best. So, what do I do? I don't want everyone at work to hate me for thinking I'm screwing them over, but I also would like to get some PTO for this. What do you think?

don't take days off. I had same situation when I joined new company. You will look really bad and you never know. I had it happened to me when I fucked up my relationship with past boss and then came back to him asking for a job (which he denied of course)

like I said though, he even gave me specific date periods where it wouldn't be so bad to take off. he just can't legally authorize it. but he doesn't really mind if it's an under the table arrangement. h:

quick question on the 5 days off ... are you sure you get them?

Most companies will give you 5 days off for 2008 assuming you're going to be with them for 365. That's 1 freebee every 73 days.

By my calculations, your first free sick day should be given on March 13th.

Yeah, I have them to burn from June 1, 2007 til May 31, 2008, which is our fiscal year. If I were to stay with the company until that time and not use them, I'd get a check for that time but since I'm leaving, I don't get anything in compensation.
