jack and jack stands...what's better?
Craftsman?

or
Central Hydrolics from Harbor Freight?
Jack:

Stands:

Or do you have another recommendation?
Not looking to spend a lot...just for doing minor maintenance on the cars

wow thats a awesome price on the craftsman set... i wouldnt hesitate if i needed some and those were available.
if you will be using jack stands then i dont see the issue with jack reliability / strength. if it will lift the car you're good.

I use the central hydraulic stands.. They're beefy and will do the job. The craftsman jack has a high profile and will give you trouble with any type of lowered car.
Costco has a really nice aluminun "racing" jack for good money.. Plust it's costco. Return for any reason. I still use my costco "suv" jack and it's been a soldier thoughout the years. I've probably used it on at least 30 cars x multiple times.
