I had a conversation with some friends a few weeks back, and it put the marriage topic in perspective.

the conversation basically went like this:
"Dennis and I were together for ten years before we got married. The reason we waited so long was that we knew we had to have our shit together before we did it. I needed to have X, Y, and Z taken care of before I decided to get married. Once I got X, Y, and Z done, I knew it was time."

i called it the XYZ speech.

while i have a good chunk of XYZ taken care of, i still have a LOOONG way to go. the gf on the other hand, has very little of her XYZ to be accomplished, and she knows it. shes on her way though, so its all goooood. we talk about it openly, since people bug us as to why we're not married yet.
