I am teh n00b. I know that I want a PS3 over a 360 (For the blu-ray) but should I get a 40GB or 80GB version? I see this as replacing my media PC.

 

Last time I checked, size doesn't matter.

.....you can upgrade the drive to 500GB for cheap if you want. Plus if you want extra storage space, just connect an external HD via USB and there ya go. I have my 160GB connected to my 60GB PS3. I watch videos/pics/etc through it.


PS: I believe the 40GB comes with a free game and 80GB with the spider-man movie if that matters any.

The 40GB has no backwards compatibility, but it doesnt look like you are wanting it for that.

 

the other advantage the 80gig has over the 40 is a few more USB slots and I believe memory card slots. considering you can upgrade the hard drive and/or plug in an external you should weigh the other options both systems have.

 

The 40GB PS3 offers everything the 80GB has, except for PS2 playback.

The 80GB PS3 software emulates PS2 playback. The 20/60GB PS3 would brute force PS2 playback though the Emotion Chip processor (a separate chunk of hardware). This would yield faster games ... and I believe PS2 game upscaling. The gem of the PS3's is the 60GB model.

The Emo chip was dumped in the latest console revisions as a cost savings measure.

It's an awesome machine, I use it more than anything that I have whether im browsing the net, playing ps2/ps3 games or watching dvds/blu-ray movies.

 

From what I know they are dropping all backwards compatibility because of issues with it.

 

I lucked out and picked up a 60gb. Still sucks that you can't play the PS2 guitar hero guitar on the ps3
