$20 million
So seriously, my work situation now is: I'm a licensed realtor, but the majority of my work is as an assistant for my mom and stepdad... I only do a few deals of my own when an opportunity falls into my lap, but for the most part, I'd say ~80% of my income is from regular paychecks for assistant stuff, not commissions.
I talked to my mom yesterday, and she's thinking about retiring from real estate pretty soon. I figured she would retire in about 3 years or so, but she was talking like she may want to leave in less than a year.
She asked me what I would do, and the immediate answer was that I would quit real estate. I never liked the business much, and I honestly don't think I would make it on commissions alone (realtors don't have regular pay, its all commission)... I'm just not motivated enough, and I'm not much of a self-promoter, which you kinda have to be.
But my real thought was, if I quit, I really have no idea what I would do instead. I've struggled to find a career that I was really comfortable with and pays the bills. I've done a wide variety of different jobs for someone my age. I have a bachelors in history, and although I'm proud of me educational background, is good for jack shit when it comes to getting a job...I've almost come to regret my choice.
So. Here I am. I hear commercials on the radio for colleges that offer MBA night classes, and I wonder if that would be any good. Theres always the thought of being a teacher (was my original plan going into college), but I'm not really enthusiastic about the pay, and I have no idea whether I'd be any good at it or really enjoy it. I also think of Lee, making pretty good money turning wrenches, but I have no automotive job history, so I have no clue if thats really an option. :edit: I have also thought about joining the coast guard (only if I can get in as an officer), but that would be a total disruption of my life and I'm not sure if I'm ok with that.
I don't really know if she's really going to retire that soon, but even if it turns out to be a few years, I should still be thinking about this.
What are your thoughts/experiences? What kinda non-technical jobs to you folks have and how did you get there? :hs:

oh and you don't need previous work experience to turn wrenches. Sure it helps as does tech schooling, but if you go into a dealership and tell them you want to turn wrenches they will set you up with an apprenticeship if they have the room to do so. One of our head mechanics started out at Acura as a porter and decided he would rather wrench, so they brought him under the head tech and started the learnin'
MBA's are overrated. so is a college degree. this isnt to say that they're "useless"... cuz theyre not. i just think theyre overrated.
what do you like to do? even if theyre just hobbies, wat do u like?
