Garmin or Lowerance are the two I would reccomend.

I had a Magellan for a week and it had a fatal software failure that destroyed the unit. Now what would have happened if I was lost 30 miles into the woods when that happened? Also Magellans customer service was complete shit.

JUST NO MAGELLAN!
i met up with my friends at a bar in SF
the bar was right next to/under the freeway.
and you know how they have so many changes to the offramps and what not.
so I got there first, my garmin rerouted me no problem right when i got off the freeway.
my friend's magellan did not reroute.. didn't know where the bar was.. he had to call me

i'm immensely pleased with my nuvi. i have noticed a few quirks but i think that can be attributed to GPS tech as it exists today.

for instance, i was in boston the other day when i first turned on the GPS that day. as such, it had to acquire the satellites, and relocate to boston. i searched for a particular point of interest (restaurant), and hit go. boston is a clusterf- as far as the roads go, so when it initially located me, it had me on the highway instead of the road that i was actually on, which runs right next to it.

then when i started moving, it wents nuts trying to place me, but once it got me in the right spot, it never lost it again and remained right on, even when i couldn't tell which way the roads were crossing and going myself. i went off the path at least once and it recalculated immediately and correctly.

i think the mapping logic somewhat relies on the driver keeping to the right path to a point, as well as already being located correctly in the first place, but once it has that, then i think it moreso depends on the unit itself.

again, i think this is just GPS tech as it exists today, but some are better than others at handling those quirks.

oh, and i too have heard bad things with magellan.

i've seen this happen with other portable units. never happens with the factory built in units. probably due to the better signal/antenna built into the car.

I just order the nuvi 660

and Im returning the 250w (which i thought was ok)

here's a breakdown on garmin models
200 series - This budget, entry level lineup includes the nuvi 200, 250, 260 and 270. All have a 3.5" screen. A relatively new series, these units have an internal antenna, giving them a less obtrusive profile.
200W series - The 200W and 250W are also entry level units with limited features, albeit with a 4.3" screen.
300 series - With more features than the 200 series, this set includes the first two nuvis ever released, the 350 and 360, along with the newer 370.
600 series - More feature laden still, this line includes the nuvi 650, 660, 670 and 680.
700 series - The newest additions to the nuvi family, these units incorporate the high-end features of the 600 series, with the internal antenna found on the 200 series.
x70 models - The tranatlantic 270, 370, 670 and 770 models have maps of the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Nuvi 350. I'm pretty happy with it. Text to speech and pronouncing street names were important features for me.
