Default Home heating dilemma

My girlfriend's apartment is always cold and she has huge heating bills, so she asked me to take a look at it. I found some major problems:

1) Lack of ceiling insulation
- Hard to fix without the landlord kicking in
2) Very thin curtains
- Easy to fix
3) Very little daytime heating (her windows all face north, away from the sun's path in the winter)
- Can't do anything about it
4) Only three functioning heating outlets - one in bedroom and one in kitchen. The other one is in a room she doesn't use so it's blocked off

And the kitchen outlet is a foot around the corner from the system inlet in the living room! What kind of retard came up with his HVAC system?

As a result of this, her thermostat is in the living room but the living room is always 5-10 degrees cooler than her dining room/bedroom due to two large windows and the fact that all of her living room heating is being sucked back into the system.

Any ideas on this? I think her only option is to block off the living room from the kitchen with a curtain (it's connected via a small doorway) so that her kitchen heating isn't wasted and buy heavy curtains for the windows. I have no idea how the living room could possibly be heated with no outlets in the room. There is one outlet but it doesn't appear to be working. I'll have to call the landlord about that. Unfortunately, he's incredibly stupid and knows nothing about home repair. He paid a mexican guy $200 to install a fucking toilet  I told him to give me $50 and I'd do it but he wouldn't

when i was living in new york
i used this window film insulation stuff.
it worked pretty good, all you need is a blow dryer to install it.

cellular blinds (i think that's what they call them) is also another ideal

all can be bought at home depot are lowes

also
the one outlet not working have you tried the circuit breakers yet?

$200 to install a toilet is just fawking dumb.

Thanks for the help. We'll go check out that film insulation later, I think I've used it before.

I think the outlet isn't working because the duct is turned off in the basement. If that one was on I could shut off the one in the kitchen right next to the inlet, so I'll talk to the landlord about it.

i have one of those radiant heat electric baseboard heaters in my bedroom cause i like it to be warmer than the rest of my place....got it at lowes & it doesn't raise the electric bill bad.

i had one in living, bed & bathrooms in my previous place cause apparantly it was insulated for shit & the electric bill was never rediculosly high

that's just a quick search & i don't see the one i have in that but you get the idea. mine has a digital thermostat, so you can set it to the temp you want & it'll cut on & off just like the central unit....works wonderful in average-sized rooms

**edit** found the one i had by searching the manufacturer

Thanks, that looks pretty good. We'll have to check out the space heaters and calculate the kW*hr useage to see if it's worth it. But then we'd be space heating the living room where the thermostat is for the rest of the house but where none of the heating actually goes to  she'd need a digital thermometer too.

Samsy: Safety is not a concern. I'd actually prefer she buy something that has a high likelihood of catching on fire :rick:
