Default Odd Router Problem

Every now and again google.com doesn't load. I can get to google when I ping it, and then I just use the server and I can get to it(like http://eh-in-f99.google.com )
Then randomly it will work again. My roommate who is connected with our router, has the same problems with it also.

gmail.com works, yet not images.google, or google.

Resetting my router(DHCP release and renew) doesn't fix it.

Any suggestions? I tried searching google, but it doesn't help.

Seriously, try updating the firmware on your router.

I searched on the http://eh-in-f99.google.com server. I'm cool like that.

I've never had to update firmware on a router. How long it the router down for? Anything I need to do? Do I need to be on a Windows machine or can I do it from Linux?

First find out if theres an update available for your router. Second, in the router access menu (localhost, 192.168.xx.xx) there should be a simple option to update the firmware. Since the hardware is independent of your machine you wont need to reboot and your OS won't matter. It'll be down for like 5 seconds.

The firmware upgrade takes like a minute. The router will reset itself afterwards. You can upgrade the router firmware from any browser as long as it lets you upload. What router do you have model and version number?

Yeah, I decided to look through the router admin page. :lmao:

WRT54G and firmware version 8.00.2
I've been trying to search for this problem but haven't seen anything like it.

It looks like this is quite common with Linksys routers, but mainly for wireless. We are both wired. They say to upgrade the firmware, which I just did, but it didn't work.
