I do know this ... the wired GH III 360 controller (Wal-Mart exclusive) is the same one in Guitar Hero II.
I'm almost sure the PS2 controller will not work for the PS3 version of the game.
I did find this ...
Thankfully IGN was kind enough to check the compatibility of the three existing controllers: Guitar Hero II's X-Plorer, Guitar Hero III's Les Paul, and Rock Band's Stratocaster. With the exception of the Stratocaster, all three guitars can be used interchangeably for all three games.

i ask because a friend of mine got GH3 (for PS3), and he's saying his GH2 guitars (for PS2) don't work with it. so he was looking to confirm that.
i have to say though, it was obviously a conscious decision to stop the GH2 guitars from working, and that's really shitty. he's going to end up with 4 freakin' guitar controllers, just so he can do two player games. way to screw your fan base...
