Default Computer geeeks...Need some help

I have an old 600m laptop. The cd-rom drive randomly ejects the disc, sometimes even when there is nothing in there and the drive isnt in use. And now, the drive doesnt even show in registered in XP. However, pushing the "open" button still sends power to the unit to pop the tray out.

I want to know if there is a way to check if its just a broken drive, or it is something to do with the motherboard. Is there anyway to check? I dont want to spend $30 on a new drive if it isnt the problem.

if it was doing that and now the drive's dead, i'd say there a good chance it is the drive.

the wife has a 600m. if she wouldn't miss it i'd send you the cd rom to test
