Default Mechanical question for a friend..

He messaged me and I do not know the answer, do any of you know what it could be?

He has a 1998 Saturn SL2 1.8l DOHC with 92k miles. Standard Transmission.. here's the description:

*********: yesterday my car wouldn't go into reverse..had to fiddle with it....today I was at a red light...green..went, put into 2nd...and then it felt like something broke..and I wasn't in any gear...had to pull over to the side of the road...was able to get it going..but the stick was in the N position..and going like it was in 3rd...I try puting it down into 4th...and i get tention that pushes it back into N
*********: could it have something to do with...i let my friend drive a few times..but stoped letting him because each time he would he would SLAM the shifter down with much force...and each timme it felt quite different in a bad way..so i stoped letting him.
Anyone have a clue? He would really, really appreciate it.

He says it only drives well in 3rd and the shift stick was not in the correct position. All other gears act like it is in neutral.

I appreciate this as well!
