There are 2 types of mods for the 360:

1. iXtreme - This is the process of extracting your DVD drive key, and reflashing the DVD rom with custom firmware. This is the most basic of mods and allows the user to run DVD-R DL discs. You're not modding the OS, you're going after a single component, the DVD rom drive controller.

2. JTag - This is the process of extracting your CPU key and reflashing an entirely new OS to your 360. The OS looks identical to the OEM MSFT one, but has all security torn down. You have the ability to run "unsigned", DRM free code ... so if the data is in the proper format, you can play it. (I have entire Rockband track libraries, full XBL arcade lineups, etc)

JTag is an extremely rare modification. Not every console can have this done because the exploit was patched around 2 years ago. My Jtagged console was purchased new back in early 2010 from old, old store inventory. The modder executed the hack (soldering, custom USB port building, etc) and sold the machine.


Reach leaked online and it's for JTag consoles only. It looks like what was stolen was the final files for disc pressing. Looking at the file structure / directories of Reach, this came off of a Bungie employee's work station. What's out there are the finalized, but raw data files.

 

It's soooooo distracting. For the past week, gunfire has broken out at random times of the day. We're all getting used to it, but shit ... this can't be cheap. Making movies of this magnitude is expensive as f*ck.

With JTag, you can recover the machine from an Xbox Live ban.


Xbox Live bans are based off of your machine's unique CPU key. If your CPU key or "keyvault" gets banned, you can obtain one (from an RRoD machine), and replace yours.

Again, Jtags run unsigned code. If you know how to hex edit and go diving into C sharp ... this happens.

 

I heard (from CBC news) the leak was caused because MS had it hosted on the marketplace, and was used to allow testers / reviewers to try it. It was hacked and the game was taken.

Pnet is the source for all major leaks. It's not even a big secret too ... everything XBL comes off of this.

The highly anticipated Sonic 4 is already in people's hands because of Pnet ... and the game doesn't even have a release date anymore.

 

How's the campaign feel, drew?

 

Rockin. The fixed the control / movement issues. The game is completely playable ... but the huge question mark is the multiplayer.

Graphics are stellar.
Sound is hollywood movie quality or above.

There's so much detail / polish on the game. It's oozing quality.

I'm very mixed about the multiplayer stuff, but I do have a feeling we're all going to be converted over sooner than later.

Cheaper RRoD fix labor. The original RRoD damage estimates were based on consoles being fixed once ... these machines are being sent back 3, 4, 5 times.
