Yellow light means slow down and prepare to stop if you aren't in the intersection already, if you are in the intersection it's to give you time to get out of the intersection so you aren't blocking the street that gets the green light.

In CA, if your front wheel are in the intersection before the light turns red, then you are good. Of course this is why they created the rushing through an intersection law and ticket for cops to write you up if they catch you doing it
