I've done this a dozen times without undoing the battery. Once you unplug it from under the steering wheel and under the dash on the passenger side you are pretty much home free. No need to pussy foot it. If it were that delicate it would have discharged already.

If you have enough static electricity in your body to meet the amperage required to deploy an airbag, then you need to be a superhero fighting crime not removing airbags.

Probably going to just swap it out with a removable at this point and sell the steering wheel complete.
