Which do you prefer.

Or is it a matter of whichever is cheapest?

OEM would be the cheapest. I got my rack for 170 from the dealer
Yakima for my car would've been over 200
both without any attachments
but I would go with Yakima, i got 3 friends who use it and swears by it
they use it for snowboard/bike/surfboard

thule uses square bars
yakima uses round bars
thats really the main difference, they arent compatible with each other, but they make the same shit

what are you carrying?
what type of car?
budget?
used ok?
anyone you know have old rack stuff laying around?

i like yakima just because my ex gf gave me a bunch of yakima shit and i used it to piece together my rack system

craigslist is your friend, tons of used racks all over the place, and old doesnt mean bad, they havent changed anything important in racks in 10 years

for a basic bike setup i would buy
yakima bars
q-towers
q-clips according to car
steelhead bike rack, its metal and not plastic
locks

Bikes and snowboards in winter. On the roof of course!

I switch the cars I drive often, so OEM isn't a good option.

Yes and no at the same time because you can order mounting solutions for each vehicle you own relatiley cheap compared to a rack for each vehicle

That being said...Yakima gets my money.

types of cars?

swapping roof racks between cars is not a simple swap over, you need specific clips for each car and they arent cheap

my advice
look for a used set of yakima q-towers and crossbars
get the appropriate q-clips for each vehicle
used bike rack, steelhead or anything better
ski rack, one of the newer ones, they are less prone to freezing up when at the mountain and being a pain in the ass to open
dont forget your locks, put them on the towers themselves and then on the bike and ski racks also

it will take an hour or so to swap the system from vehicle to vehicle, but its the best route for a solid rack system that will last the life of the vehicles and then some
