Default Question about porting cell numbers

I'll give you the cliffs notes:

-I have a 2 year contract with ATT, it expires 8/22.
-I want to switch my cell number to a different provider.

When is the best time to port my number, right before the contract expires or right after? I don't want to pay for an additional month of service if I do it right after, but I don't want to pay for early cancellation fees if I do it right before.

Which strategy is best?

if you port anytime before your contract expires, they're gonna charge you early temination which is 150 I think.
when I ported, I waited until the day after I was no longer in contract

Hmmm...I did a google search an apparently a lot of people wonder this. It appears the most common thing to do is to cancel AFTER the contract is up but right BEFORE the next billing cycle ends. Since my contract ends on the 22nd and my billing cycle ends on the 2nd of the following month, I'll just do it somewhere in the end of August.
