No magic, no mystery. We allowed this to happen in order to form diplomatic relations with China and put pressure on the Soviet Union. We continue to allow this to happen because there is a lot of money to be made by exploiting the Chinese people. In fact, we raise money for the PLA by buying products that were made in their factories. This is, of course, the same PLA that marched into Tibet and pissed on the Dalai Lama.

No. It's actually kind of a strange cross between western and eastern religion.
