I really like my NEC drive. It's about 2 years old, but still works great. I think it's model number is 3500AG, and I use a modified firmware.

cdfreaks.com is a great web forum for this type of stuff.

Seriously? I have a BenQ internal drive. I've used it once, it was so loud, pretty slow, and wasn't that good of a burn. I decided to use my external burner instead of selling it.

They took a joint venture into optical storage.
Kinda funny, because I took my Phillips, and loaded it with the BenQ firmware. h: Though I don't expect him to be able to run a Hex editor correctly anytime soon.
...
Just found out that in 06 BenQ's division was bought out by LiteOn, and that the venture is now headed by LiteOn and Phillips, I wouldn't be suprised if the drives were loud now seeing as I've had 2 LiteOn drives in the past and they were loud as all hell.

Benq, Liteon, Samsung, and LG are some of the worst drives out there. LGs are known to fail after roughly 6-7 months and they are discontinued by then.

This is why I say Pioneer for as they are fast, quiet, reliable and stay in production for a while.

I've had my LG external for perhaps a year and I've never had a single failed disc.
