some chipsets are more picky than others. Some chipsets need exactly the same, most don't. Some will let it work but at slower (single channel) speeds.

For the most part, it'll probably work fine.

2) My wifes new laptop only came with 256mb ram (her parents got it for her for almost nothing) and I want to upgrade it. It can take up to 2gb of ram. According to Kingston's website it takes 200-Pin DDR2 533 but it directs me to Dell specific ram (it is a dell but the dell specific ram is more expensive). I assume that the below ram will work fine even though it's not dell specific. Will it work?

I built my own desktop last year but I never heard of dell specific ram.
Its better to match them all up as you could cause incompatibility issues or memory issues.

I believe some mother boards require matching pairs, like you have, but you can have several pairs.

what he said

1 if it's running ok and it's using dual channel then you're good to go, if not take out the 2x512

2 dell is just trying to make $ reselling ram
