The lock is what you have to install to make it legal. if you remove it it becomes illegal.

Found this randomly on the internet. Dunno who the guy is. It looks like it shows that there is a lock in place. Then he unscrews the lock. Then drops the mag. Actually, I think the guy actually is from AZ and just bought the lock kit anyway to mess around with.

In California, owning an "assault rifle" is illegal. An assault rifle is defined with some specific definitions...not limited to, but we will use in this example pertaining to the magazine:

A semiautomatic rifle that is able to accept magazines AND have blah blah blah features. With the lock kit, the rifle is NOT able to accept magazines, since the magazine is locked onto the rifle and can NOT be removed without the use of a tool...therefore it is NOT an assault rifle. Once you remove the lock, it will be able to accept a magazine...and if it has blah blah features...it is now an assault rifle.

The letter of the law says the magazine must require a tool to be removed. In spirit, of course, it intended a fixed (welded) magazine, requiring the separation of the receivers to load. You can buy ARs with welded mags, and they are without question legal. However, by the letter of the law, all that it requires is that you need some sort of "tool" to get the magazine out. There is the familiar set screw lock, but there are also ones that use an inset mag removal button, which requires a round or some other sort of tool to actuate, which, by the letter of the law is legal.

When I get around to getting my CA ID, Ima get one with the set screw. That way if the zombies come, I can undo it and kill em all with removable mags h:
