Actually "Assault Rifle" was coined by Hitler when he dubbed the MP44 the "Sturm Gewehr". The term was hence forth used by gun makers to describe a small high capacity rifle that fires an intermediate bottle necked cartridge. The media and law makers often incorrectly use the term to describe battle rifles that fire full size rifle cartridges such as the 7.62NATO(.308win).
